We were watching men’s tennis matches today and saw the wrongful call made by a judge. As a result a match was lost by James Blake of the United States. The ball had touched the top of the racket of Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez and caromed out of bounds but the judge missed the touch. Now my question is, if Olympic sports are an honorable pursuit, why is it deemed permissible to allow a foul or a line touch with out the offender or the player that saw it admitting what happened. The philosophy by athletes of every sport seems to be “If they don’t catch me it is not a foul”. I just don’t see how that in anyway reflects good sportsmanship or the spirit of any games, especially the Olympics. I do realize that if we were to go back and review all the tapes of past Olympics like we do with drug testing and impose the rule of honesty to the events, there would be a mess of epic proportions. But, you know what, right is right and a foul is a foul!

So while I am on the subject of honesty I want to talk about the “illegal aliens” that are living in our country. If you read my blog, you know I am a soft touch, a liberal with not a lot of common sense and an advocate for children of all ages. Still I just don’t understand the part of “illegal” these people didn’t get. It seems that the Mexican government is just now beginning to understand that they are not a part of the United States and never have been. They fought very hard a long time ago so they could be a separate country and so did we. We have Texas, California and who knows what other states because of that war. Then we signed a peace treaty and it was over! Or at least we thought it was. But obviously they (and employers in our country) wanted to have it both ways!

Sunday Morning

So the Mexican political officials came to Arizona to complain about the illegal aliens being returned to Mexico. SHERYL KORNMAN of the Tucson Citizen reported the event in January and we received an email with a writer’s take on the event the other day. In the newspaper account Kornman said:

A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona’s new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.

Quotes from the legislator from Sonora were just amazing.

“How can they pass a law like this?” asked Mexican Rep. Leticia Amparano Gamez, who represents Nogales.
“There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona,” she said in Spanish.
“Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems” it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs, she said.
“We are one family, socially and economically,” she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.

I truly am confounded by the whole thing. I suppose that we will be expected to fix things in Mexico…which might not in the end be a bad idea. I suppose U.S. citizens will have to go to work in fields and packing houses. I suppose the cost of living will go up even more and Social Security will loss huge amounts of money because while illegals pay in with fake Social Security numbers so they can’t take anything out. I suppose little children will
suffer. And doing the right thing is never easy. So while I see the ramification of being honest…in the Olympics and in the illegal emigrant problem…didn’t they understand it was illegal and a foul?
