I was doing my circuit at Curves yesterday. There is always lots of reading on the wall by the stations in between the machines. This week the information has been on the need for people, seniors in particular, to pay attention to their vitamin D intake. It seems that in our rush to prevent skin cancer from the exposure to the sun we have done something even worse to ourselves. We have not let the sun do what it is very best at…give us the gift of vitamin D.
This very important ingredient in our diet or in our outdoor activity is an important component in preventing heart problems. You heard me right….heart problems. Who knew? A website called Fighting Fatigue told about dangers which included “Vitamin D deficiency could cause include heart disease, chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, hypertension, arthritis, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, PMS, Crohns Disease, cancer, MS and other autoimmune diseases.”
The same article went on to say that 20 minutes in the sun gets you 100 times more than you need. In order to get that much vitamin D you would need to drink 40 glasses of milk…burp!!!
The thing is 20 minutes in the sun will probably not hurt you. But in the case of vitamin D it could save your life. Read this article: The Dangers of Vitamin D Deficiency. You won’t regret it.
