Electric Lady Land Building Funded by Anti-Porn Activist ( Friday FICTION)

Friday Fiction Prompt
An unsigned invitation arrives requesting your protagonist’s compulsory attendance at the opening of Electric Lady Land.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. William Berger,

You presence is required at the opening of Madeline Corina Electronic Language Library located at the corner of Madeline Street and Corina Avenue downtown Morgan Town. All activities will begin after sunset on October 17. Bring the enclosed ticket…it is required for admission.  Adults only please.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Everyone in the small community received the invitation.  It appeared outsiders were going to be turned away at the door.  No one was very surprised.  The new library and it’s mysterious past had been subject of conversations for many years now.

The building had been a eyesore for many years.  The small community only knew the building as THE ELL.  When the construction sign was erected after construction began all those years ago, people began wondering about the letters.  Soon THE ELL came to be known as Electric Lady Land because the large tower on the front curved gently toward the sky and in the light of the setting sun, the glass reflected the perfect curvaceous silhouette of a naked lady.  The town began calling the sunset image Madeline Corina for the intersection she reigned over.

The owners of the property had originally intended to use the building as a national headquarters for it’s conservative causes.  The building’s architect, a staunch supporter of the group and it’s mission, had driven up from the southern California to take a look at the building.  Naturally he was appalled.  He saw what he had never noticed before…a beautiful naked lady glowing in the window tower of the 10 million dollar building.  It was to have been his tribute to the Conservative Leaders of American, a movement orchestrated by a front company called  Erngadget Inc.

Several weeks later a local newpaper reported that THE ELL had been donated to the city of Morgan Town.  A short article said simply, “THE ELL building in Morgan Town is being donated to the community as a tax write off by a company that has been suffering financial problems as a result of the bad economy and a changing cultural climate in the United States.”  The statement puzzled the community and many wondered what the town fathers would do with the “sunset lady”.

Everyone was very surprised when the true purpose of the building and the name of the owners was finally revealed several years later.  A local newspaper person won the Pulitzer Prize for writing the expose’ and bringing the truth to light.  Several articles were written in the series but the crux of the information revealed that the company was owned by the wealthy ultra conservative puritan leader, D. L. Poirstrom.  Mr. Poirstrom was the notorious founder of the Burn Porn Books, Inc..  BPB, Inc. was noted for sending offending books to the news media and school leaders with all the offending words highlighted in pink.  It was rumored that the group had a waiting list of volunteers to be readers of suspicious books or magazines.  Membership at that time numbered in the 100’s.

Radicals from the liberal movement had made threats against the company, giving Poerstrom the original idea to remain anonymous.  Mr. Poirstrom died 2 years after the articles appeared and following a scandal about his interest in “protecting” children from unsavory activities.  His death was said to have been under suspicious circumstances.

The building stood empty for a number of years.  After the newspaper’s revealing series about the true identity of the builders, an anonymous donor paid to have the local library moved to THE ELL building.   The only requirement was that the tower could never be changed in anyway.  The donor plaque said, “The Madeline Corina Electronic Language Library tower should remain as a reminder to everyone that the truth can always be seen when the light is just right.”

Oddly enough a small sign across the street was removed soon after the invitation only gathering at the library.   The advertisement for tire flaps designed for semi trucks had featured the silhouette of a naked lady.  The sunset lady was gone forever.  The owner of a local restaurant was heard saying he thought “the light may never need to be just right ever again.”  Another businessman from the community only nodded his head.  He owned the porn shop across the street.
